ABOUT THE ROLE:
Oliver Street Kitchen has an opportunity available for an experienced Cook to join its kitchen team on a full-time basis.

This is a hands-on operational role responsible for preparing, cooking, and presenting a broad range of contemporary Australian and internationally inspired dishes in accordance with established recipes, quality standards, and service requirements. The successful candidate will contribute to all aspects of kitchen operations, including food preparation, cooking, plating, stock control, and maintaining a safe and efficient commercial kitchen environment.

The role requires the ability to manage allocated kitchen sections, coordinate workflow during busy lunch and dinner service periods, maintain consistency in food quality and presentation, and work collaboratively with kitchen and front-of-house staff to ensure efficient service delivery and a high standard of customer satisfaction.

This is a full-time permanent position based on a minimum 38-hour working week.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Food Preparation and Cooking:
  • Prepare, cook, and present a wide range of contemporary Australian and internationally inspired dishes in accordance with established recipes, quality standards, and presentation requirements.
  • Prepare premium meat, poultry, seafood, pasta, salad, and seasonal menu items using appropriate commercial cooking techniques including grilling, roasting, frying, baking, poaching, braising, and sautéing.
  • Undertake ingredient preparation including washing, cutting, trimming, portioning, marinating, and mise en place to support efficient kitchen operations.
  • Monitor cooking times, temperatures, seasoning, and presentation to ensure consistency and quality across all dishes.
  • Adjust food preparation and cooking methods where required to accommodate service demands, dietary requirements, and customer requests.
Kitchen Operations and Service Delivery:
  • Support efficient kitchen workflow during lunch and dinner service to ensure timely preparation and delivery of meals.
  • Manage allocated kitchen sections, ensuring workstations remain organised, clean, and service-ready throughout each shift.
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen and front-of-house staff to support coordinated service delivery and order accuracy.
  • Assist with the preparation and execution of daily specials and seasonal menu offerings.
  • Adapt efficiently to changing service demands while maintaining food quality, presentation, and operational efficiency.
Stock Control and Kitchen Organisation:
  • Assist with receiving, inspecting, storing, and rotating food supplies in accordance with established stock control procedures.
  • Apply FIFO stock rotation principles to minimise spoilage and maintain product freshness.
  • Monitor stock usage and advise senior kitchen staff of inventory shortages or ordering requirements.
  • Participate in stocktakes and maintain organised storage areas to support efficient kitchen operations.
  • Ensure appropriate labelling, storage, and handling of food products in accordance with food safety requirements.
Food Safety and Compliance:
  • Maintain compliance with Australian Food Safety Standards and safe food handling practices.
  • Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness throughout food preparation areas, equipment, utensils, and workstations.
  • Monitor food storage, preparation, cooking, cooling, and holding temperatures to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Follow workplace food safety procedures and cleaning schedules to maintain a safe commercial kitchen environment.
  • Comply with Workplace Health and Safety requirements, including the safe operation and maintenance of commercial kitchen equipment.
General Duties and Team Contribution:
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and efficient workstation throughout each shift.
  • Work collaboratively with kitchen staff and management to support efficient daily operations.
  • Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, punctuality, and a positive team-oriented approach.
  • Follow instructions from senior kitchen staff with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Participate in ongoing workplace training and continuous professional development to further culinary skills and operational knowledge.


MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Relevant qualification in Commercial Cookery (Certificate III or higher) or a closely related field, together with at least one (1) year of relevant full-time experience in a commercial kitchen; or equivalent skills and experience suitable for the position.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and cooking meals within a commercial restaurant, hospitality, or food service environment.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Food Safety Standards, kitchen hygiene, and safe food handling practices.
  • Ability to prepare and cook a diverse range of contemporary Australian cuisine using a variety of commercial cooking techniques.
  • Experience working efficiently within a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment.
  • Availability to work weekends, evenings, public holidays, and rostered shifts as required.
