ABOUT THE ROLE:
The position of Painter is a hands-on trade role responsible for carrying out residential painting and surface finishing works across interior and exterior building environments. The role involves preparing surfaces, applying paints and coatings, maintaining finish quality, and supporting efficient completion of residential projects in accordance with construction schedules and quality standards.
The successful candidate will work across multiple residential sites and will be expected to demonstrate attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to operate efficiently within active construction and residential environments. The role requires both independent task management and collaboration with supervisors, builders, and other trades personnel.
Structured on-the-job training and ongoing development support will be provided to suitable candidates demonstrating strong foundational skills, reliability, and willingness to develop within the business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- SURFACE PREPARATION AND PRE-PAINTING ACTIVITIES:
Prepare interior and exterior building surfaces for painting through sanding, scraping, patching, gap filling, sealing, and priming processes. - Remove old paint, residue, imperfections, and surface contaminants to ensure appropriate adhesion and finish quality.
- Repair minor surface defects including cracks, holes, damaged plaster, timber imperfections, and uneven finishes prior to paint application.
- Protect surrounding structures, fixtures, flooring, windows, and fittings using masking materials, plastic coverings, and drop sheets.
- Erect and dismantle ladders and access equipment safely in accordance with workplace safety requirements.
PAINT PREPARATION AND APPLICATION:
- Select and prepare paints, coatings, varnishes, and finishes in accordance with project specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
- Mix paints and related materials to achieve required colour consistency, texture, and application standards.
- Apply paint finishes using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment across a range of residential surfaces including walls, ceilings, timber, cladding, doors, and trims.
- Carry out interior and exterior painting works while maintaining consistency in finish quality, coverage, and presentation standards.
- Monitor drying times and environmental conditions to ensure appropriate application outcomes and minimise defects.
RESIDENTIAL PROJECT AND SITE OPERATIONS:
- Undertake painting activities across residential construction sites in accordance with builder schedules and operational requirements.
- Coordinate workflow with supervisors and other trades personnel to support efficient project progression and minimise disruptions.
- Maintain awareness of project timelines and complete allocated work within required deadlines while maintaining workmanship standards.
- Assist in identifying surface issues, preparation requirements, and finish inconsistencies during various stages of construction.
- Support final touch-up works, detailing, and presentation preparation prior to project handover.
EQUIPMENT HANDLING AND SITE MAINTENANCE:
- Operate painting tools and equipment safely and efficiently, including spray guns, sanding equipment, ladders, and scaffolding systems where required.
- Clean, maintain, and store painting equipment and materials appropriately after use.
- Maintain clean and organised work areas throughout all stages of painting activities.
- Dispose of waste materials and unused products in accordance with environmental and workplace procedures.
- Report damaged equipment, safety hazards, or material shortages to supervisors promptly.
WORKPLACE SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE:
- Comply with Workplace Health and Safety requirements at all times across residential construction environments.
- Follow safe manual handling procedures and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure compliance with site-specific safety requirements and builder protocols.
- Maintain awareness of hazardous materials, ventilation requirements, and safe chemical handling practices.
- Contribute to a safe, organised, and professional work environment across all job sites.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- Relevant trade qualification in Painting and Decorating or related field, or a minimum of 1 year of relevant full-time painting experience within a residential environment.
- Demonstrated experience in interior and exterior residential painting works
- Ability to prepare surfaces and apply paint finishes to a professional standard
- Understanding of safe work practices and construction site safety requirements
- Ability to work effectively within deadlines and varying residential construction schedules
- Current driver licence preferred
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT:
Structured on-the-job training will be provided to suitable candidates to support skill development, painting technique refinement, and operational efficiency within residential construction environments. Candidates demonstrating strong work ethic and reliability will be provided opportunities for broader exposure across different residential painting projects and finishing techniques.
