ABOUT THE ROLE:
An opportunity exists for an experienced Welder (First Class) (ANZSCO 322313) to join the business on a full-time basis. This is a hands-on trade position responsible for carrying out a broad range of welding and metal fabrication activities within a workshop and, where required, onsite project environments. The successful candidate will be responsible for interpreting technical drawings, preparing materials, welding fabricated components, inspecting completed work, and supporting the efficient delivery of fabrication projects while maintaining high standards of workmanship and safety. The position requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a fabrication team, maintain production quality, and contribute to the timely completion of engineering and fabrication projects.
This is a permanent full-time position based on a minimum 38-hour working week.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fabrication Preparation and Material Processing:
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and work instructions to determine fabrication and welding requirements.
- Select, inspect, clean, and prepare metal stock and fabricated components for welding.
- Measure, mark, and cut steel, aluminium, stainless steel, and other metals using hand tools, flame cutting equipment, power tools, and metal cutting machinery.
- Shape, bend, and prepare metal sections, pipes, and fabricated components using appropriate manual and mechanical techniques.
- Prepare workpieces to ensure accurate fit-up prior to welding.
Welding and Fabrication:
- Align, position, and secure fabricated components using measuring equipment, clamps, jigs, and hand tools.
- Perform welding using appropriate processes including MIG, TIG, Arc (MMAW), and other welding techniques where required.
- Join metal components through welding, bolting, riveting, and related fabrication methods.
- Manufacture, assemble, modify, and repair fabricated metal products in accordance with engineering specifications.
- Complete fabrication work while maintaining dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and quality standards.
Quality Assurance and Finishing:
- Inspect completed welds for penetration, bead profile, alignment, strength, and finish quality.
- Identify and rectify welding defects or fabrication inconsistencies where required.
- Finish fabricated products through grinding, filing, polishing, cleaning, and other finishing techniques.
- Ensure completed work complies with project specifications, engineering drawings, and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate measurements and workmanship throughout all fabrication activities.
Workshop Operations and Equipment:
- Operate welding equipment, grinders, cutting machinery, lifting equipment, and fabrication tools safely and efficiently.
- Perform routine maintenance and basic servicing of welding equipment and workshop tools.
- Maintain clean, organised, and safe work areas throughout fabrication activities.
- Assist with material handling, storage, and workshop housekeeping.
- Support efficient workflow to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
Workplace Safety and Compliance:
- Comply with Workplace Health and Safety requirements and safe work procedures at all times.
- Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and welding safety equipment.
- Maintain awareness of welding hazards, confined spaces, hot works, and safe handling of materials.
- Report hazards, equipment faults, and safety concerns promptly.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, professional, and compliant workshop environment.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- Relevant trade qualification in Engineering Fabrication Trade, Fabrication, Welding, Metal Fabrication, or a closely related discipline, together with at least one (1) year of relevant full-time post-qualification experience; or equivalent skills and experience suitable for the position.
- Demonstrated experience undertaking welding and metal fabrication activities within an engineering, manufacturing, construction, or fabrication environment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and fabrication specifications.
- Demonstrated competency using MIG, TIG, Arc (MMAW), or comparable welding processes.
- Sound understanding of fabrication techniques, welding quality standards, and workshop safety procedures.
- Ability to work effectively within production schedules while maintaining quality workmanship and attention to detail.
